I started my genalogy journey around the year 2000. Mainly to learn more about our family. At that time all I had was our Akerman Life books and Family Tree Maker. There were some CD's that had genalogy information on them when helped a bit. Over the years things got much better. Especially with Family Search by the LDS, Ancestry, and My Heritage. There are a few other sites but those three are the main ones that I use. Then along came DNA testing the results of which have expanded our family considerably. Including relatives we never knew existed. Like my cousin Harold LeRoy Ackerman which was given up to adoption and became Ernest Hurst Cherrington III to Adalaide Ackerman back in th 1800s. I don't know if anyone today knew about her. The about of DNA matches equals thousands including 4th and 5th cousins to distant relatives. I don't spend as much time as I used to maybe a few hours a week but I'm still searching. Mainly for sources or records. I know they're out there some where..
